Sleep abruptly ended at 3:30am when our bodies' internal clocks decided it was time to be awake. After a bus and a short train ride we were back at Heathrow Airport where we ate breakfast and boarded another 747 for Nairobi, Kenya. The skies were clearer for viewing without the heavy haze that often hangs over this route. Steve and Sylvia were intrigued by the sights over Sicily, Libya and Sudan. A darkening sky gradually swallowed the unlit wilds of Ethiopia off to the east. Even towering Mt. Kenya finally succumbed to the night as we began our approach into Nairobi. Once we made it through customs I acquired a minivan to take us to the our hotel. Steve Kennedy masterminded the stacking of luggage that included 13 large suitcases, 6 carry ons and 7 people including the driver. At 10:30 we got the doors shut and were driven to Country Lodge where everything was unloaded just in time for a curious surprise. Our hotel reservations were not in their computer system! Worse, they and all other central Nairobi hotels are fully booked this week. No matter how I tried, there was no way of finding a hotel in the area. However, I made a quick call to the Safari Park Hotel and negotiated not only 3 rooms, but an excellent resident rate for everyone. Steve, good sport that he is, re-engineered the re-packing of the minivan and actually had more room left over than before. We arrived at our new destination and made it to bed by midnight for some much needed sleep.
