9 October - The pounding rock and regge rythms from two kilometers away in town grew louder as morning neared. Then, at 4:30am the rooster by our window prematurely announced the new day arousing both dogs who heartily joined in an odd symphony of crowing, howling, guitars and drums. The monotone dirge of the morning call to prayers through another set of loudspeakers at the town mosque attempted audio dominance next. Merrie announced, "We need Satan to be bound" to which I retorted, "Yeah, so people can sleep!" As rapidly as it had set, the sun arose and the whole cacophany simply ceased. The quiet was profound. But it came too late for us as we soon left for Atonement services with the Got Kachola congregation on the remote shores of Lake Victoria. The drive on dirt roads in our RAV4 vehicle took around 2 hours each way. The brethren were happy to keep the Feast day with us and after services groups of us visited under the shade of cactus trees while many ladies sang hymns together. Afterwards we pounded our way back to our home in Migori arriving shortly before the beginning of a second night of youth "culture."
