Crossed over the state line into New South Wales. Immediately a 1 hour forward time change- on heading south- I always thought time changes were due to longitude, not latitude?!
New South Wales is what Australia was first named by Captain Cook, but no one really knows if he meant a new Wales of the Southern Hemisphere or a new south Wales in terms of Cardiff, Swansea etc... Seems a bit unfair on North Wales if you ask me, although it is grim up North! I'm staying in Byron Bay in a place called the Art Factory.. it's basically a hippie commune, cleverly disguised as a hostel, complete with tepees, hammocks, abundant rasta hairstyles and a strange incense/'herbal' smell wafting through the air. Still, the people seem very friendly in a dazed kind of way!
I took a day trip to Nimbin Town, which seems stuck in the 1970's, when the Aquarious Festival came to town, and changed it forever. It was an amazing drive there through the countryside, which seems so English familiar due to above average rainfall recently, with a stop at the waterfalls for a swim and an barbie! Aside from that I've been hanging out on the hammocks of the hostel with Kim, Eric and Cerry, and generally being a beach bum, venturing out for surfing (finally able to stand!) In all, a great place to unwind before the assault to the senses that will be Sydney at Christmas and New Year. I'm meeting again with all the people I've met on my journey down the East coast, so it should be a good one!
