I've spent the last 2 nights on a place called Magnetic Island- so called apparently because Captain Cook (discoverer of Australia) had 2 compasses malfunction on him as he was passing the island! It's a fairly small place with about 800 people living here, and probably more Koalas! It was heavily fortified during WWII for the impending Japanese invasion, much of which is still in place.
The white water rafting was great fun- more photos of this to come later once the photos are sent to me! However my tail bone is still in some pain from getting hit by hidden rocks after falling off and traveling through the rapids at high speed! I was on my boat with 4 Estonian girls who did their best to ignore all instructions given to them by the guide, leaving the boat in precarious positions on rocks a number of times! It was great fun though and is something I'd love to do again!
I've been staying in an 8 bed dorm, which is taking some getting used to after the en-suite $5 rooms in SE Asia! On the plus side, it does mean you can meet people far more easily, and I'm now with a group of friends I'll be more or less traveling with all the way down to Sydney for Christmas. Christmas is a strange idea at the moment with this hot weather- it really doesn't feel like Christmas at all! We all bought Santa hats yesterday in the supermarket, so expect a few photos of us with them on at the beach! We all took bikes out yesterday to explore the island.. Many koalas in the wild on the trees and a few dead snakes on the road! Great beaches- it's a shame we cant go into the water at the moment due to the lovely combination of deadly jellyfish and sharks!
I'm off to the Whitsunday Islands tomorrow on a traditional sailing boat for 2 nights, with about 15 others, which should have pretty amazing scenery. More thumbnails ...
