On my arrival at Mui Ne I headed straight for the famous sand dunes and rock formations. These are something no-one associates with Vietnam, and at times it was like being in a desert- the dunes were endless. As soon as I arrived at the dunes I was accosted by around 20 kids who were all looking to guide me to the dunes and hire me their sledge for sand sledging.
They were all undercutting each other in an effort to get my business and it was a bit overwhelming as they all looked very poor, but my easy rider guide, suggested I go with the one who first asked me and negotiated him down to about 50p! The children spoke great English and were pretty knowledgeable about London- I guess from the interaction with all the tourists! They took some great photos and the sledging was great fun. In the end i gave them a pound each for effort.
Since then, all I have been doing for a few days is absolutely nothing! I've met a French and a Swiss girl who are working with charities for children in Cambodia, and been hanging out with them, teaching them to play pool!- sign of a misspent youth?! I've also decided to extend my trip by 6weeks, spending Christmas in Sydney and returning mid Feb next year. This means I can visit Cambodia, a place the girls say is friendlier and safer than Vietnam- although i cant believe it! After the weekend in Saigon, I'll be heading to the Mekong delta before taking a tour boat up the Mekong to Phenom Penh and 2 weeks in Cambodia.
