After the disappointment of missing out on Ha long Bay due to the typhoon, my friend Liz of Taunton suggested we go south the mountains of Tam Coc, which are similar to Ha long Bay without the bay! We caught a very bumpy bus south in the afternoon before checking into a guesthouse suggested by a fellow Vietnamese passenger- who happened to be working there and even got the public bus to drop us off outside! The evening was another strange one- had a few beers in a very empty nightclub (far too big for a town of this size!) before cutting our losses and heading back to the guesthouse for food to avoid the incoming storm. We realized the seriousness of it when the staff came into the rooms to tie up all the doors and windows in a hurry- apparently it was closer than expected.
The next day we booked a couple of motorbikes with divers (don't worry Mum!) to take us out to Tam Coc and a couple of other sites along the way. We saw some amazing sights and the scenery was fantastic. We got completely soaked but it didn't matter due to what we were seeing! The boat trip was another soaking- but we helped them paddle to get through into the caves for shelter along the way. After buying the boat owner and her son some drinks, we headed back to be driven onto some high points to survey the surrounding area. It seems that everyone wanted to take their picture with me at one of these due to my height- I was a minor celebrity and a crowd of around 15 schoolkids surrounded me for a picture! Unfortunately my camera had run out of battery at this stage, but Liz says she'll send them on!
Anyway, just to let you know I'm safe and well. I ha vent stepped on any land mines so far, and Pol Pot is dead as far as I know! They even have the Internet here! Next update soon!
