It's been an amazing week- Hong Kong's as good as ever! I'm in Singapore at the moment for an overnight stop before heading off to Hanoi.
On Tuesday night I met my second cousin Mark, who now lives in Hong Kong and is the same age as me when I lived there. It supposed to be a quick couple of drinks to catch up, but we met a couple of guys from England on their travels, Matt and Nick, and then a couple of Dutch girls joined us and we ended up finishing around 2! I told them I? was going to the races on the wednesday with my old school friend John Chan- something they hadnt even heard of but me and Mark explained that it's a must- with the beers flowing, we all agreed to meet the next evening at the races. This turned out to be another cracking night. Most of us managed to win something at some point- mine was a $600 return on a $50 bet!
Next stop was wanchai, and dancing on the tables at Carnegies before heading of to Dusk Till Dawn. It was Nikki's birthday too so we made sure she got a few dedications. Anyway, it was great to get to the races again- They really are spectacular as you can see from the photos- a floodlit stretch of green surrounded by skyscrapers, with an amazing atmosphere and cheep beer! It was also great to meet and get to know my second cousin- it was good to compare stories of life out here and I found I got on with him well- I wish him all the best with his time out here- he seems to be having as good a time as I had!
Thursday I took easy, but Friday I met with an ex girlfriend from 10 years ago when I was here. We went for a few drinks in the Felix bar at the top of the peninsular hotel with an amazing view- including the one from the men's urinal- not good if you're susceptible to stage freight or heights! (See photo). It was great to see her again after all this time and catch up. Headed to Delaney's again after, which was quite quiet till 3am when it fill with rugby supporters in about half an hour to watch Ireland vs. France in the world cup rugby- amazing atmosphere, so decided to stay a little longer. Was sat by the bar next to an Irish/Chinese guy from Limerick- was really strange to hear that accent on him!
Saturday was an early start again, sadly to leave for Vietnam, but not before one last tour of central and a look at the harbor which is about to be filled again for yet more reclamation. Very sad to leave the place, as I felt so at home there. Its great to know the place is still very similar to what it was after 10 years of Chinese rule, and I hope to return again soon- whether that's to live again or for a holiday is yet to be seen!
