Rio de Janerio, population 7 mil!

Arrived in the afternoon & booked into a cheap hostel in a 9 bed dorm, that had triple bunk beds. We were staying in an area called Catete which is quite central to everything in the city. Had a look around where we were staying & then went shopping at a large market near Centro. John, Tracy & I all felt a bit fed up due to all the overnight buses we had taken in the last few days, & Tracy took us all out for Treacles Treat!! It was a very nice restaurant & we all got dressed up, for a change! Tracy ordered a shrimp skewer, Lou a nice Salmon fillet & John a T-Bone steak as big as his plate, all washed down with some nice wine (Cheers Tracy!).

Rio is such a large city & we had to get some sights in before Tracy flew home on the Sunday. Went to see the Paco Imperial which was formerly the royal palace as well as a walk down Avendia 13 de Mayo & around the Centro area. The Pao de Acucar known as the Sugar Loaf, which is a mountain with a fantastic view of the city. The Cristo Redentor the big Christ that looks over the city, which is on the Corcovado mountain. Obviously had to take a day out to visit Copacabana Beach which was packed & had heard lots of mugging stories, so spent the afternoon in Ipanema on a safer beach. Met a nice bunch of people staying at the hostel so went for pizza with them one night, stayed in with pasta & DVD when we were to tired to go out. Also managed to get a night in at a club which we thought was Samba but wasn´t, had a great evening all the same dancing Brazilian style!

Quite sad the next day when we took Tracy to the airport to say goodbye to her, but all good things have to come to an end! Had to rush back from the airport though as we were heading out that evening to Maracana to watch some live football.

Not much to report for the last week in Rio, except that they were wet so we put on lots of pictures on travelpod. It wasn`t all bad as the last two days were quite sunny, so as you can guess we hit the beach.
