Colonia is a very cute little fishing town (although there doesn´t seem to be much evidence of fishing going on right now...) on the south coast of Uruguay. Like most of S. America it was colonised by the Spanish, but was used specifically as a border for extracting import & export taxes from those taking goods between here and Argentina.
The old town, near the port itself, has lots of old cobbled streets and a lot of character. It also has the oldest church in Uruguay, which we had a look around for all of 3 minutes! Other sites we saw were the town´s 5 museums (all of them VERY small) which had a combined entrance fee of 25p.
We only spent one night here, in a fairly decent hostel, but can´t say what the nightlife is like as our evening consisted mainly of sitting in the communal lounge watching Superman & Superman II with a 75p bottle of wine.
