Friday, April 6, 2012

Today was Karfrietag, or Good Friday in German, a holiday so most places were closed except attractions and restaurants.  Today we went walking in the "Saxony Switzerland" (no, it's not in Switzerland, it's supposed to be the Saxon version of Switzerland!).  Lots of huge sandstone formations and lots of people enjoying a grey and cold day (it was 5 degrees C; about 41 F).  We walked a lot up and down and through the formations.

We then drove to the Czech boder where we had seen shop "Free Shops" from the train earlier in our trip.  I thought these might be good places for souvenir shopping but it was just shops for Germans to purchase alcohol, cigarettes, perfume and a few other goods at a lower tax rate.  Crossing the border is like going between US states

We then stopped at a HUGE fortress called Koenigstein; it was getting late so we skipped going in and decided to take a "short" walk around the perimeter of the castle. Almost two hours later, we finally got around the whole thing.  Very impressive.  We may return later in our trip since we have to return our rental car in Dresden which is not too far from the fortress.

We ended the day with a nice meal at a local Gasthof or Inn; I had some venison medallions with a nice sauce and wild berries and mushrooms and Jerry had a nice schnitzel...

Tomorrow we leave for Eisenach which is in another state; Thuringen or Thuringia in English.  More sights to see there...

Those sandstone formations remind me of Bryce Canyon in Utah. They are gorgeous. I love Jerry's hat and new purse. It's totally a purse I would buy, and black too which is very neutral.
I love that you can walk around with beer. I wish I could do that here at work.
Heck, I'd be happy driving home with a beer in my hand too.
Well it's almost quittin' time. I made it (almost) through another week. TGIF.
Good Friday it is!

I'm out of breath just looking at those sandstone formations and walkway! You must be in really good shape! I had a busy weekend with the Met opera broadcast and play...Waiting for Godot at the Mark Taper Forum. The leads were both Beckett specialists. So, you see, I'm doing lots of sitting!
