A GOOD night's sleep helped us recover from the previous day's ordeal, and when we woke up we went to explore the beautiful city of Sucre.
Sucre was the first Andean city we visited and at an altitude of 2,700 meters, we first experienced the increased difficulty of walking uphill with the thinned air.
Set in the low Andean foothills, Sucre is like an alpine town in appearance, and the well kept main plaza is a relaxing place to spend time.
Feeling hungry after two days' starvation on the nightmare bus, John was in the mood for a large plate of food.
We discovered the local dish, pique a lo macho, to be just what the doctor ordered.
It is a classic South American dish, with a pile of chips covered in spicy beef, peppers, onions, spicy sausage, gravy, mayonaise and an egg on top for good measure!
A highlight of Sucre is the Museum of Indigenous Art, which has a large number of beautiful, intricate weavings along with a history of the rituals and customs of the local people in the different regions of Bolivia.
We couldn't resist buying an exquisite weaving made as part of a scheme to revive the artistic tradition of indigenous people in communities nearby.
Having rested for three nights, we decided it was time to move onwards and upwards to our next destination, Potosi.
