Where I stayed
Clayton Lake State Park, NM

A new day, windy, but new and off we go toward New Mexico.  It was easy driving and wide open spaces.  We were just clipping the northeast corner of New Mexico and decided to try to spend the night there, so I would have time to cook our St. Patrick's Day corned beef.  But, where to stay?  We stopped in Clayton, NM, and found this rather tired looking KOA Park.  I just shook my head and John kept driving.  We stopped at the grocery store and met some really nice people working there.  They suggested we give their local lake a try, even though it was ten miles in the wrong direction.  Yes!  It was just what the doctor ordered.

Clayton Lake State Park is one of the darkest places in the United States.  So, it is perfect for star gazers and even has its own observatory.  There are dinosaur tracks along a trail.  I wanted to get a photo for James, because he love dinosaurs, but it got dark too fast.  Sorry, James.

We met a friendly fisherman from Texas who told us about their 125 year drought.  He was a farmer and quite a nice guy.

Yes, it was windy, but we took a hike and enjoyed our night here.
