Beach not always accessible without getting wet
We stayed at Malaetia for the rest of our stay in Samoa and thoroughly enjoyed our time - we were the only guests at the time, meaning we were treated with extra hospitability. Sung arranged one of the guys at the resort to take us to Virgin Cove Beach on a traditional outrigger canoe. Virgin Cove used to be a budget resort but it has been renovated and facilities added and it's now far from budget... Having our lunch in the resort restaurant we overheard a Swedish guy from Stockholm complaining about the room service not being good and cleaners not speaking English. And how on the airport the currency exchange booth didn't have enough cash to exhange their thousands and thousands of Swedish krone to Samoan talas..! Some people have a different attitude to travel and we are quite happy not to have that attitude - for sure we enjoy our budget adventures more than that bloke from Stockholm! Virgin Cove is a beautiful place to visit and the beach is gorgeous, landscaped and a bit artificial but definitely everything you dream a Pacific beach to be. There is a less crowded (read: nobody there apart from you) beach west of Virgin Cove where we went for a walk and discovered fresh water springs by the beach, spurting water from under the sand.
Soon it was time for us to head for the airport but before leaving we had the opportunity to "help" Sung and his guys net fishing
Canoeing the samoan way
. Fishing with the net means two guys spreading a net in a big circle, hoping to catch fish in the middle, and at least three people then running inside the net circle, splashing water and making as much noise as possible to scare the fish to swim into the surrounding net. Much more fun than fishing with a rod and bait, especially since we did it at around 7pm in the darkness! We caught three fish and had them for dinner - the traditional way of killing the fish is to bite it in the head, and that's how it was done... We decided not to help with that part! The dinner was delicious, as you would expect. Sung and Otilia had offered to take us the airport on the other side of the island meaning we could enjoy our last evening in Samoa to the max before taking the plane back to New Zealand at 2 am, it's not often that you are fishing just a couple of hours before taking the plane.. Thank you to Sung and Otilia for their hospitability - we recommend their place to everybody!Après quelques minutes passés dans le taxi afin d'atteindre le village voisin, nous voici arrivé dans un endroit qui s'appelle Malaetia Resort - Jamais entendu parler de cet endroit sur notre guide, mais cet endroit s'avère être excellent! Bien que nous débarquions à 8 heures du matin (un peu tôt pour demander un hébergement) nous avons été très bien accueilli par le propriétaire lui même. Il nous a invité à prendre le petit déjeuner avec lui et sa femme

. Il nous a ensuite fait faire le tour de l'endroit et nous a préparé un fale. L'endroit en lui même n'a rien d'exceptionel (juste quelques bungalows et fales) mais il a la particularité d'être à la lisière d'une mangrove, ce qui change des plages que nous avons vues ces dix derniers jours. Ce qui a vraiment fait la différence dans cet endroit est la manière dont nous avons été accueilli par Sung et sa femme Otilia. Nous avons été nourri gratuitment 3 fois par jour (on a bien insisté pour payer mais ils n'ont rien voulu prendre). Nous avons même été invités au repas de famille du dimanche midi!Bien que nous pensions rester que pour une nuit à l'origine, nous sommes restés à Malaetia pour le reste de notre séjour. Pendant ces 3 nuits nous étions les seuls touristes et c'est surement la raison pour laquelle nous avons été aussi bien accueillis. Sung a fait en sorte que nous allions visités Virgin Cove (une plage voisine considérée comme l'une des plus jolie de Samoa) en pirogue traditionnelle. Virgin Cove était il y a quelques années une plage avec une auberge de jeunesse mais récemment, un couple a racheté l'endroit et y a construit un hotel/fale 4 ou 5 étoiles. Donc c'était hors de budget pour nous mais on s'est dit que ce serait sympa d'aller là bas pour la journée. La plage de Vrigin Cove est vraiment paradisiaque et s'étend sur plusieurs kilomètres. A l'Ouest de Virigin Cove il y a une plage déserte (quand on dit déserte on n'éxagère pas) nous sommes allés nous ballader sur cette plage sans y croiser personne...Une experience de la vie à la Robinson Crusoé

.Il était maintenant bientot l'heure de retourner sur Apia...Nos deux semaines de vacances dans les iles pacifiques touchaient à leur fin, mais avant de traverser l'ile pour rejoindre l'aéroport, Sung voulait nous faire découvrir la pêche a la façon des samoans. A la tombée de la nuit, nous sommes partis sur la plage à cinq. La pêche sur les iles, c'est beaucoup plus sympa que la pêche traditionnelle avec canne à pêche. Deux personnes aux extrémités d'un filet de plus de 20 mètres de long qui forment une sorte de demi-cercle, 3 autres personnes qui courent temps bien que mal en direction du filet grand ouvert en éclaboussant et en faisant le plus de bruit possible. Vers environ 19 heures, il faisait nuit noire et on y voyait plus rien mais on a quand même réussi à pêcher 3 poissons - idéal pour le dernier diner sur les iles...du poisson frais! La méthode traditionnelle pour tuer le poisson est de le mordre derriere la tête...Ils nous demander si on voulait essayer mais on a préferé refuser! Le dinner était délicieux...Comme on pouvait l'imaginer, Sung et Otilia n'on pas voulu que nous prenions le bus et on fait le taxi à l'autre bout de l'ile pour nous amener a l'aéroport. Notre dernière soirée sur les iles a été excellente grace à eux. A quelques heures du décollage on pechait sur la plage, de quoi profiter au maximum des dernieres heures! Merci une fois de plus Sung et Otilia pour votre hospitalité...Malaetia Resort, un endroit fortement recommandé!
