Quick warm up
Kaikoura is one of the best places in the world to go swimming with dolphins as they have huge pods of dusky dolphins close to the shore. Duskies are known as extremely curious and acrobatic, perfect for entertaining an excited group of tourists. After having received our snorkelling gear, complete with wet suits and fins, and having learned a bit about the dolphins' life and their home, we hopped on a bus that took us to the harbour and on to our dolphin boats. The weather had been quite windy the day before and the seas choppy but today the sea was calm and the sun out. Everyone was hoping we'd be as lucky with the dolphins as with the weather. The guide told us that although it is quite common to have pods of hundreds of dolphins to swim with, it's also just common to see much smaller pods or even just two or three dolphins.

Everybody kept their fingers crossed and eyes on the sea to spot any jumping acrobats and soon we did see them! Hundreds of dolphins jumping out of the sea, racing next to the boat, under the boat, somersaulting in the air. All of the sudden we were in the water with them, snorkelling in the middle of 400 dusky dolphins. The cold water was a worry for Jo but it turned out the wet suits really do a good job in keeping the cold out. Another thing, the snorkel - Jo has not snorkelled before and had trouble coming to terms with the fact that you can breath under water... After a few tries she decided being surrounded by dolphins in the deep sea is not the best place to learn it! Julien loved the snorkelling though and was amazed to see the dolphins were so curious and intelligent. The sheer numbers were so huge it was even scary at times, like being dropped off in the middle of a dolphin highway in 5 o'clock rush hour.

Jules managed to get some up close and personal action with them, catching their attention by looking them in the eyes and then turning and diving. Making funny sounds through your snorkel also helps to attract them. We have some good video footage, including first, pretty excited comments of Jules straight out of the water and completely at awe of the magnificent and mysterious dolphins. The swimming really is a must do and Jo will try snorkelling in less populated waters and definitely try dolphin swimming again in some other corner of the world. Not sure there will ever be such a good opportunity though!
Singing with the whale
Notre rencontre avec les dauphins est prévue pour début Avril et coïncide avec l'anniversaire de Jo (Une 27eme bougie et des rides qui apparaissent) mais avant le jour J nous passons une journée dans la station thermale d'un village alpin qui s'appelle Hanmer Springs. Ce petit village est vraiment sympa et vaut le détour. D'après nous, le meilleur moment pour venir ici est en hiver, passer la journée dans les bains extérieurs avec vues sur les alpes enneigées. Nous n'avons pas eu droit a la neige en arrière plan mais nous avons eu un beau soleil et avons passes une journée détente.

Kaikoura est l'un des endroits au monde les plus répute et fiable pour nager avec les dauphins car ce petit village de quelques centaines d'habitants voit venir de manière régulière près des cotes des dauphins "dusky". Les dauphins dusky sont réputés comme étant extrêmement curieux et acrobatique. Parfait pour distraire ces groupes de touristes excites à l'idée de voir des dauphins. Après avoir reçu tout notre attirail de plonge et après avoir été briefe sur les dauphins et leur environnement, nous sommes près à prendre le bus direction le port. La veille les conditions n'étaient pas top, le ciel était couvert et il y avait des rafales de vents mais aujourd'hui pas un brin de vent et grand soleil. Le beau temps était avec nous, on espérait tous pouvoir voir des dauphins. Notre guide nous expliquait que c'était un peu quitte ou double...Un jour il y a plusieurs centaines de dauphins et le lendeamin pas un seul!
Excited???me???No!
On était tous aux extremités du bateau a contempler l'horizon pour voir un dauphin ou deux sauter, on a rien vu venir pendant quelques minutes et puis d'un coup d'un seul on s'est retrouvé en plein milieu d'un groupe de plusieurs centaines de dauphins. Il était alors temps de se jeter a l'eau et de tenter l'experience de nager avec les dauphins, 400 dauphins environ. Jo redoutait un peu l'eau froide mais nos combinaisons nous ont tenu bien au chaud. Jo redoutait aussi d'avoir a respirer dans un tuba sous l'eau, elle n'avait jamais fait de plonger avant et se demandait comment faire. Apres quelques essais peu convaincant et un peu stresser par tous les dauphins qui lui tournait autour, elle a préferée rejoindre le bateau et contempler les dauphins au sec! Julien à lui adoré l'expérience, il en revenait pas de voir a quel point ces dauphins sont joueurs et intelligents. Ca faisait parfois un peu flipper de voir un groupe de 50 dauphins nous foncer dessus, mais au final tout s'est bien passé, c'était vraiment génial!

D'après notre guide, il est recommandé de faire un maximum de bruit dans nos tubas. Les dauphins étant curieux, on a plus de chance de les voir s'approcher. Jules a suivi ces instructions à la lettre et a reussi a s'approcher de vraiment très près et plonger avec eux. On a une vidéo et les commentaires a chaud de Julien une fois de retour sur le bateau, whouaaa, à couper le souffle! Nager avec les dauphins est vraiment une expérience inoubliable et Jo va retenter l'expérience. Elle s'est promis de repartir en plongé sans les dauphins pour commencer et pour s'habituer au tuba. Pas sur, par contre, qu'elle ne puisse avoir cette opportunité une nouvelle fois.
