Cable car
New Year's was spent getting steadily and happily drunk with an Irish couple, Laura and Nev, that we shared our room with in the hostel (Base Backpackers, not the best ever place to stay but at least clean and has all the things you need, apart from a hot shower...).
Private toga party!
We decided to skip the toga party that was going on in the hostel bar and headed for a free concert in the city and to bars after that. Irish bars of course! Laura and Nev tought us (and the barman) a new drink called Mini Guinness - Tia Maria topped with Baileys in a shot glass. Yummy! The bar tour ended up back in the hostel, making a lot of noise and building hammocks out of sheets. Don't ask...
Jules updating the blog
Our idea was to spend January and beginning of February in Wellington working and injecting some money in our budget so the next task was to find a room and start hunting for jobs. We found the room easily through Gumtree.com - two Canadian post-grad students were looking for flatmates until February and we moved in on 06/01. It is actually a whole house, which seems to be more common in NZ than flats. The house is about 20 minute walk from the centre and really close to the famous Wellington Botanic Gardens and we can take the also famous cable car instead of a bus! The best thing about our room is the price, we pay only $90 (45 euros, 30 pounds) per week. That's for the whole room, not per person.

Job hunt was held back for ages because of holidays, all the agencies were closed until 7th of Jan and even after that it was very slow to pick up as their clients were on holiday until 14th or 21st so no jobs coming in. By the 21st we only had 3 weeks left in Wellington and most office temping jobs are longer than that.
Monkey!
Office temping seems to be the best option, we both have experience in offices and it also pays better than hospitality. And then of course you have weekends and evenings off... Julien wanted to try his luck with restaurant work and found a job in a restaurant that opened on 23rd, owned by a Dutch guy who is a chef. In the end we both ended up working for Arthur Le Chef, if only for 3 weeks. It's good fun now that the team has learned from the first night's hickups!

Otherwise we've been chilling, taking walks in the city, exploring Te Papa museum (the least 'museumy' museum in the world), watching Lord of the Rings (a scene in Return of the King was filmed in the Pinnacles, you can recognise it immediately!).
Penguin alert
Last Saturday Jo was working in Wellington Cup, the biggest horse racing event in NZ - in the VIP bar of a fashion event. There was supposed to be some celebrity spotting there but it's hard to spot the Kiwi celebrities, don't know any of them! Lots of free flowing champagne and funny hats though. Jules met up with Laura & Nev and their flat mates and spent the day betting on horses (two bets of 2 dollars, lost all the money).
Welly city
If you are in Wellington, take a walk to Mt Victoria lookout. If you walk up from the top end of Majoribanks St, you'll come to a small clearing with a huge tree. Somebody has put a big swing in the tree and you can swing on top of the Wellington harbour and city centre - amazing views and surely something you don't find in a Lonely Planet guide book!
Frog legs
In short we are loving Wellington, although it's the windiest city we've ever been to, and will most likely be back for the winter. Our plan at the moment is to head back to Auckland for Matt's and Tina's wedding, caving and bungy jumping on our way and be back in Wellington for the ferry to the South Island on 25th of February.
Ancient Chinese martial arts
A few months in the South and then back to Welly for winter and work, this time for real. And then towards Australia, Bali, Thailand, Vietnam... eventually up to Beijing and then train to Moscow, St Petersburg and back to Helsinki. We'll see how that plan holds, there's a lot of time to change it still!Enfin, une mise a jour de notre site depuis notre arrivée sur Wellington il y a bientôt un mois. Nous sommes arrivés à Wellington a la fin Décembre juste a temps pour célébrer la nouvelle année dans la capitale. Nous avons passé la nuit du 31 avec un couple d'Irlandais, Laura et Nev, que nous avons rencontrés dans notre auberge de jeunesse.

Nous n'étions pas trop motivés par la soirée toge organisée par le bar de l'hotel (toge avec nos draps), nous avons préferés aller en ville pour voir des concerts et faire une tournée des bars. Des bars irlandais bien evidemment! Laura et Nev nous ont fait découvrir (ainsi que le barman) les Mini-Guinness, un shot de Tia Maria avec du Baileys! La fin de soirée, ou disons plutôt le début de matinée s'est terminé dans notre chambre à construire des hammacs entre les lits avec nos draps...Ne demandé pas pourquoi...
Experimental kitchen
Notre idée était de passer Janvier et le début de Février sur Wellington afin de travailler un minimum et de réenflouer un peu les comptes. Il nous fallait donc tout d'abord trouver un appart ou une maison à partager avec des collocs, puis un boulot. Trouver un toit n'a pas été un problème, après quelques heures passées sur Internet a faire des recherches, on a trouvé deux Canadiennes qui cherchaient un couple pour occuper la troisieme chambre pendant environ 6 semaines.

Nous avons aménager le 6 Janvier. Nous partageons une maison a quatre, situé à environ 20 minutes à pied du centre ville et juste en face du Jardin botanique de Wellington et tout pres du fameux Funiculaire.
God, I'm soooo HUNGRY!
Trouver un boulot a été un peu plus difficile car durant les deux voire même les trois premières semaines de Janvier, toutes les entreprises et même la plupart des restaurants sont fermés. Arrivés au 21 Janvier nous n'avions toujours pas de travail et nous n'avions plus que 3 semaines à passer dans la capitale (ce qui n'arrange pas les choses! Trouver un travail pour trois semaines seulement, les agences intétimaires n'apprécient pas trop!).

Julien voulait tenter sa chance dans un bar ou dans un restaurant afin d'acquérir un peu d'experience dans ce domaine. Il a trouvé un boulot dans un nouveau restaurant qui ouvrait le 23 Janvier situé à Johnsonville, environ 10 km au Nord de Wellington. Le chef cuisinier est Hollandais et plutôt cool. Au final nous avons tous les deux dégotter un job dans ce même restaurant. Après les mésaventures du premier soir et un gros problème d'organisation, tous roule désormais. Nous allons travailler dans ce restaurant pour 3 semaines au total et peut être en Avril une fois de retour sur Wellington.
Concert
A part ça nous profitons de Wellington pour se relaxer. Pour être honnête, voyager tout le temps, tous les jours est relativement fatiguant, depuis notre départ de France au début du mois d'Octobre, on ne s'est pas vraiment arrêté, donc là on en profite un peu. On se ballade en ville, on visite le musée Te Papa (probablement le meilleur des musées que nous avons visités jusqu'à présent), on a regardé une nouvelle fois la Trilogie du Seigneur des anneaux (le réalisateur Peter Jackson est de Wellington et il y a plusieurs scènes tournées dans les environs. Il y a également une scène dans le troisième film qui a été tournée dans les pinnacles, ou nous avons passés Noel). Samedi dernier nous sommes allés à la plus grande course hyppique de Nouvelle Zélande (la Wellington Cup). Jo travaillait là bas pour la journée dans un des bars. Elle s'occupait de l'espace VIP. On imagine qu'elle a du servir plein de célébrités. Le fait est que nous ne connaissons pas les célébrités en Nouvelle Zélande =) Pendant que Jo gagnait des sous à servir du Champagne à des célébrités, Julien lui en dépensait en pariant sur les courses. C'était une première et il a trouvé ça plutôt sympa. Là bas nous avons rejoins nos potes Irlandais Laura et Nev, on a passé une bonne journée.
Mt Victoria lookout
Si un jour vous avez la chance de venir sur Wellington, il est conseillé de venir au sommet de Mont Victoria. De cet endroit, il y a une vue sympa sur le port de Wellington. Sur le chemin, presque au sommet, il y a un arbre énorme et quelqu'un y a accrocher une corde. On s'y est accroché plusieurs fois, vu que c'est en pente c'est un peu impressionant, mais surtout la vue de là bas c'est le top!
Cuba St, Wellington
Pour tout vous dire, on adore Wellington, bien que ce soit une ville ou le vent ne s'arrête jamais de souffler. Des rafales de vent à nous faire tituber sans avoir bu. Difficile de faire du cerf volant dans ces conditions. Notre plan pour le moment est de retourner sur Auckland a la mi-Février pour le marriage de Matt et Tina, en chemin nous nous arreterons pour visiter une grotte pendant 24 heures, faire du saut a l'élastique a Taupo (50 metres de haut et finissant la tête dans la rivière). Nous serons de retour sur Wellington le 25 Fevrier, date a laquelle nous prenons le ferry pour aller sur l'ile du Sud. Nous resterons sur l'ile du Sud pour environ 6 à 8 semaines et nous reviendrons sur Wellington cet hiver pour y travailler pendant environ 5 mois. Notre retour en Europe se fera par l'Australie, Bali, Thailande, Vietnam, Pekin afin de prendre le train trans-sibérien en direction de Moscou, St Petersburg et Helsinki. Pour le moment c'est notre plan mais voyons comment les choses vont se dérouler.
