Next stop is Rotorua where the thermal activity makes the whole place stink of rotten eggs... The geysers and steaming rocks are everywhere and the smell doesn't make the town bad, it's a really nice place and you soon get used to the smell. And you can fart without anybody noticing!



We stayed at a nice campsite close to the city - the site has a hot water beach (dig a hole in the ground and it will fill up with naturally hot thermal water), hangi cooker (traditional Maori steam cooker, cooks the food with thermal steam from the ground) and hot spa pools. All for campsite prices...! Our site was right next to a 'boiling mud hole' as it was marked on the map of the campground.

We visited Waiotapu thermal park, amazing place that has gushing geysers. They probe the Lady Knox geyser to erupt every morning at 10.15 by putting soap in the hole. Lady Knox works hard for the tourists and can go on spitting water for an hour.

Something green

The scenery looks like in the moon (never been there but guess it might look like that), with all colours in the world around you, orange rocks, bright green lakes, pink steam... The biggest lake is called the Champagne Pool - didn't really look very inviting though to go there for a swim, it's all quite poisonous looking!

The following day we wanted to try the Zorb, rolling down a hill inside a ball, with water. It turned out to be a bit disappointing, the hill wasn't that big or steep and the price at 50 dollars per go was too much for us.

So we just took a few pics and headed back to the campsite to bake ourselves in the sun. The sun here is unbelievably hot, it burns your skin really easily and we took some cooling dips in the pool. Later we hit the spa pools for some relaxation, very nice... Hangi meal and bottle of wine and we were ready for bed.

Notre prochaine destination est Rotorua, une ville ou l'odeur est horrible (senteur d'oeuf pourri) a cause des stations thermales naturelles. En revanche, ne vous fiez pas a l'odeur, la region est plutot sympa et une fois avoir pris l'habitude a l'odeur il n'y a plus que du positif!

Nous sommes restes deux nuits dans un camping avec plein d'activites et plein de choses a voir autour. Le camping est situe tout pres d'un lac de sable fin. Si vous prenez le temps de creuser un trou d'environ 1 metre de profondeur, le trou se remplit d'eau chaude (grace a ces eaux thermales!). Il est possible de profiter de cette eau chaude de plusieurs facon, comme le hangi par exemple qui est une sorte de cuiseur vapeur. Nous avons cuisine deux soir de suite au hangi. C'est pas mauvais du tout, par contre il faut etre patient. Le mouton et les pommes de terre du premier soir ont du mettre au moins 3 heures a cuire! Nous etions gare juste a cote d'un 'trou de boue bouillant'.

Nous avons passe une journee a Waiotapu, un endoit hallucinant avec des geysers en eruption. Le 'Lady Knox' geyser est parfait pour les touristes. A l'aide de savon qu'ils mettent a l'interieur du cratere, l'eruption est assuree pour environ une heure, tous les jours a 10.15. Les paysages etaient hallucinant, bien que nous ne sommes pas encore alles sur la lune (peut etre notre prochaine destination!) c'est endroit ressemble vraiment a un paysage lunaire! Le lac le plus garnd dans ce parc s'appelle la piscine de champagne. Malgre le nom, on a pas risque de s'approcher trop pres.

The Zorb

Le jour suivant nous voulions essayer le Zorb. Le Zorb est une activite 'Made in New Zealand'. Une grosse boule qui devale une pente avec des gens a l'interieur. Ca avait l'air pas mal sur le papier, mais une fois sur place, nous avons un peu ete decus. La pente n'etait pas vraiment abrupte et plutot courte. Le prix etant excessif, on a prefere renoncer. Nous sommes donc retourne au camping pour profiter des piscines et des bains thermales.
