Our Red Devil

We picked up our Red Devil from the San Diego airport - piece of advice, arrange car rentals in advance and don't always believe the quotes on the websites, we ended up paying twice the amount quoted because of drop off fees and insurances... the quote was supposed to include all that!. RD would take us through the desert to fabulous Las Vegas and on to San Francisco, in 7 days. Another piece of advice - buy a good map for the roads! We trusted our Lonely Planet bible for the beginning and then had to give up and buy a road map, LP is not exactly geared for car trips...

Pioneertown

We started off towards Palm Springs and watched the thermometer climb as the Ocean was left behind. In Palm Springs we reached the record 90F, if we remember correctly that's 34C. Palm Springs is an amazing city in the middle of the desert, palm trees everywhere and seeing it from distance really makes you think you are hallucinating. We continued our way to Pioneertown, it's a Hollywood set that was built in the Joshua Tree National Park for filming westerns in the 40's. We got to play cowboys for a bit and the sunset timing was excellent!

Nous avons loué une voiture (mazda 3 rouge) pour une semaine a l'aéroport de san Diego, parce que nous n'avions pas reservé à l'avance, la location nous a couté une petite fortune...2 fois le prix indiqué sur le site Internet à cause des assurances et tout ça, une fois l'addition digérée, on s'est rendu compte qe c'était une très bonne idée de louer une voiture. Pour voir la Californie, la vraie, il faut sortir des grandes villes. Notre plan était de monter de San Diego a San Franciso en faisant une halte à Las Vegas, tout ça en 7 jours.

Nous sommes partis en direction de Palm Springs, quittant l'Ocean Pacifique et se dirigeant vers les déserts californiens, on a vite vu le thermometre monter, pour atteindre les 90F (34C) pas si mal pour la mi-Octobre. Palm Springs est une ville hallucinante en plein milieu du désert, avec des palmiers et de la verdure de partout, ça ressemble a un mirage vu de loin! Nous avons continué notre chemin en direction de Pioneertown, c'est une ville créee dans les années 40 uniquement pour le tournage de films de western. Nous sommes arrivés la bas au bon moment, juste pour le coucher de soleil.
