So, we've arrived safely in Singapore, headed from the airport into town and found the hotel and all is good. After a shower and change Liz decided to have a Singapore Sling for breakfast (it's fine, it was after 5 here - but around 10 am UK time) and then into town for some food.
It's about all we've been good for this evening really - 16 hours traveling with around 5 hours sleep doesn't really set you up for a wild night on the Singapore tiles. So we've opted for the drinks, dinner and early night option - with dinner with my old uni friend Andy set up for tomorrow night instead.
I would predict that Singapore would appeal to all sorts of people - interesting enough for the culture vulture, cosmopolitan enough for the shopper, clean enough for people who object to 3rd world squalor outside the 5 star hotel. Very friendly, very polite - and since I was expecting a clean Hong Kong, it's proving to be a very pleasant surprise in how un-manic it appears.
The temptation to buy all sorts of goodies in Chinatown was there - all the usual touristy Chinese rubbish - but we will remain strong and resist on this visit. Any special requests for Chinese wine should be emailed to the usual address, and assuming the plane doesn't require a mid-air refuel I shall try and bring as much home as possible. You know you all love that delicate mixture of rasping, neat alcohol and sweetness.
