Back to New Zealand via Port Vila

Tuesday was a travel day. We were up very early to catch our 7:00 flight back to Port Vila. The Twin Otter was on time and we spent an hour and a half getting back to the capital. We stored out luggage there and took a taxi into Vila. This took quite a while because there was a festival going on in town, and a footrace had most of the streets blocked in the center of town. We finally reached the embarkation point for Iririki Island, which sits a few hundred meters out in the bay. There is an exclusive resort on the island on the spot where the British High Commissioner's residence used to be. We took the free launch out to the island where we had a pleasant walk among the trees before having lunch in the restaurant. There are beautiful views of the sailboats in the harbor, the port, and the city itself which was especially colorful because of the festival. It was a business and tourist festival organized to encourage international investment in the nation. After lunch we took the boat back to the main island and had a walk through town, where we saw a band playing to a large crowd in a carnivalesque atmosphere.
We caught the flight back to Auckland where Jeff Caudle once again met us at the airport. We were disappointed that we hadn't made contact with anyone, but it was a very educational and enjoyable trip for our family. In the days following our return, several e-mails arrived in Jeff's inbox expressing regret at missing us, and hoping that another visit could be arranged some time in the future. So it would seem that some good may have come from the visit.
