Flag of Portugal  , Santarém,
Thursday, December 23, 2010

Tomorrow is Christmas eve, and every local we talk to seems very pessimistic of our options for the holiday. Apparently everything is closed and everyone will be with their respective families out of sight.. But for now the streets are buzzing with last minute shopping as in Portugal, presents are opened on Christmas eve. So this really was the last chance.

In Santarem, in between blasts of sporadic rain, we explored the town. Notably the Church where Pedro De Maneses is laid to rest. He's their hero fellow who founded Brazil for the Portuguese, pretty much the big boss of their armada at that time.
A bit across from that was a tower that we climbed for 1€ each to get a great view of the town. Its so great here, churches are how they should be: Free, and in some cases they thrust an audio guide at you for no cost! We love Portugal.

There was also an amazing church called Marvilla, that had wondrous blue and white tiles covering the entire interior.

We’d been bummed out because Maccas has denied us internet here in Portugal without the use of a mobile phone. The info lady pointed us at the local library, A huge building with only one wall of books… But we enjoyed awesome wifi, including massive downloads of many Xmas related TV.
The info lady also pointed us out to a town across the way that is running a Christmas festival. So even on Xmas day, we may have something to do.
