Flag of Spain  , Andalusia,
Sunday, December 12, 2010

To be honest we were a little bit bummed by the amount of Britishness on the southern coast of Spain, so it was a little bit of a relief to head up north around the Sierra Nevada mountains, to a town called Gaudix.

Along the road we stopped a while at La Callahora, which had an amazing 16th Century castle, which looked just cool standing in the foreground to the snow covered mountains. We scrambled up the loose stony hill on the opposite side of the valley so that we could get a good photo.

In Gaudix we enjoyed the unusual cathedral, even slinking in during mass to steal some photos. The medieval quarter was very interesting, but the main wow factor were the Gypsy houses. The entire area was infested with them, not in a bad way, but they were a bit like wood worm, digging into all the cliffs around making underground homes. It sounds pretty sketchy, but the houses were all really decent, painted and ornate.

Later we drove into the mountains, up into the reservoirs, and found a nice park where we set up a little warm camp-fire and dug in for the night. A good day.
