Today we had an even warmer day, some 30°C! so great. We paid out the day in a place called 'Elx' (or ‘Elche’). A place like none other we had seen. It was once roman owned, but in the middle ages was run by the Islamic moors until the Christian crusades sent them packin’. There still is an Arab castle in the town.
We attended mass in the cool Unisco church there, rather accidentally, but it was really awesome
The best thing about Elx though are the Palm groves. The place is literally in a Palm jungle, continuing a palm agricultural tradition from Moorish times. It was so awesome. Palms everywhere! We wandered around eating the dates. They say there are some 200,000 fully grown palm trees. That is a lot.
In the arvo we kept on driving and came across a strange castle aloft a spike of a mountain. On top was a huge statue of Jesus much like the ‘Christ the redeemer’ in Brazil. There are so many cool surprises.
The landscape has turned dry and rugged. We suppose just like we thought Spain would look like stereotypically. But still orange crops everywhere. Intermittently planted by artichoke.
