Evenually we got to a backwater town called Cullera, after miles and miles of orange tree fields as far as the eye could see. We are in Valencia country after all…
When we found a nice park we suddenly became friendly with some other REAL hippy campers. These 4 hippie guys had been chumming it up in a little white work-van, and apart from the storm clouds of marijuana smoke which seemed to magically follow them; they played a mean game of frisby. In fact, they asked US if we would play with THEM! Good thing we were already dab-hands!
They had spent a couple of weeks in Cullera picking oranges for chicken scratch pay, and pretty much smoking pot and playing frisby
So a good think to remember back at home is that when you buy Valencian oranges, they most likely have been handled by a dirty dirty hippie. One of them told us that the orange skins have petrol inside them… which also we imagine is another way for him to get a good high.
They were heaps funny, we hung out with them until it was far too cold. Funny thing about hippies is that they share everything! They were sad when we refused their dirty coffee bowl as it got passed about.
The next morning we left the town with no real interest in exploring it, and ended up in another resorty seaside town called Gandia. The day was an anomaly! Some 22-25°C with warm wind and hot sun. We found a park and took to the enormous beach, which in summer would be crowded shoulder to shoulder, but on this hot winter’s day was nearly empty of people. We walked the boulevard and bought 5kgs of Valencian Oranges for 2€ and sat by the ocean eating then, like real hobos. We got many odd looks. But that’s probably more due to the fact that we are odd looking.
Btw, hippies are awesome; we hope to go see some real hippie communes in the south. Heaps interesting.
