Saint Remy as we found out is the home to a 1000 year old monastery, that in the 19C became a insane asylum called Maison De Sante Saint Paul. The same insane asylum that was hospital to the brilliant and disturbed artist Vincent Van Gogh.
That first day we did the walking tour of the town and countryside looking at many of the exact vantage points of a lot of his paintings.
The morning after we paid to visit the asylum where many patients are still treated.
We learned so much about his life, art and afflictions. Afflictions which were treated with all the "kindness" of 19C medicine. Truly brutal.
In the mental hospital he painted the largest portion of his works before being released in 1890 where a month later he shot himself.
It was so interesting to see how technical his genius was, as he described his technique is one of his letters. The raw and crude nature of his works were layered with such intricacy and skill that still confounds it viewers.
