We shot across east in a vain attempt to kill time before the truffle festival in Volterra. And what better place to kill time then in the gorgeous country side in Chianti.
We had to pass through Florence to get to Greve, a little district very famous for the best of Chianti wines.

In Chianti, you can safely say that everything is all about wine. Mmm, and to a lesser extent food. So we got stuck into the winery, the oldest and biggest in Italy where we got to sample dozens of amazing wines, most of which were very expensive.

The time in the winery was at times spoilt by the arrogant Americans milling about, yelling at one another who was the most knowledgeable about wine, being very rude to the staff and trying to aggressively haggle down their bill at the end. We were so angry at the yanks as we ate out little packed lunch in the corner. It is the first time on the trip we have really wanted to hit somebody.

A great thing we learned to appreciate was the Supertuscan wines, the pinnacle of quality in Tuscany. It goes: Chianti, Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva, then Supertuscan. It is the batch of wine where the grapes are picked at their absolute best. And it is awesome. Hmm, but maybe still a runner up to Brunello.
