Pompei was not how we imagined it at all; It is literally a full city with streets and shops. We didn't imagine it would be so big, but the city is enormous! Not may of the roofs survived the years but practically every wall and floor is fantastically preserved and snap frozen from the year 79AD. Every wagon-wheel rut is perfectly etched in the roman streets. The many mosaics that survived the volcano are so colourful and intricate. The Frescoes there, as well as the graffiti, literally paint an accurate picture of what life was really like around the time of Christ!

Because this is a pre-Christian Roman city, there are dozens of pagan temples and signs everywhere of the hedonistic and vulgar ways of the people. Sexual imagery and giant phallus’s are rife throughout the entire place.

We had seen on a documentary that there was a perfectly preserved brothel somewhere in the place, but we searched high and low for it to no avail. Eventually we figured out it was called the 'Lupanare’ which essentially is the ancient latin word for whore-bag.
When we got there we had to wait in line with the hordes of tour groups (which was rare because otherwise Pompei is fairly deserted). The walls were all frescoed with graphic pornography and little limericks etched in the walls by the prostitutes. When we were searching for a souvenir keepsake, we couldn’t go past the wing’ed erect penis. The perfect embodiment of our experience in Pompei.

The several villas that were especially in good nick were outstanding! The villa mistere had several colourful ceilings and amazing full frescoed rooms which depicted strange and curious pagan rituals. The bakeries and the grape presses were an amazing testament to the fact that ancient Romans lead a lavish and sophisticated lifestyle. Despite the violence and depravity that is. (Although that is everywhere still).

There are 66 hectares of city and only 45 have been excavated, which means they are still making wonderful discoveries all the time about ancient life. We saw at least half a dozen sites that were full of archaeologists leaning on shovels like counsel workers. We got to see lots of human and animal corpses that were petrified under the ash rock. The whole city of Pompei is fascinating! It was us actually stepping into another world.

Did we mention, after Jena had repaired her thong, the other one snapped in the temple of Venus, forcing Joel once again to got bare footed again for the day.
