Today was Jena's birthday, and of course everyone except Joel remembered. What a dickhead. Jena was very upset with him and his penance nearly lasted the whole day. Joel is not good with numbers and yes, he failed the test. We did our best to salvage the day. Jasmin had drawn her a wonderful picture and the family had nice notes to give.

When we came into this lake/alps town we had the "wonderful" opportunity to drop the folks off at their hotel, which was in a busy foot plaza in the middle of the medieval centre of town. Somehow Loren had convinced some policeman to let us in past the barrier.
When we were leaving to go and find our park we were told to take the first left and then up the hill to freedom. What we discovered was that there was a gate stopping us. We then began an agonizing decent in reverse down the seeming 45 hill which was terrifying as our front brake pads had just that day worn through…
We got wedged at the bottom and became embroiled in a clutch burning catastrophe that nearly had us rolling into an expensive looking shop front.
We amassed a large group of spectators and they all enjoyed watching Joel struggle with the almost impossible task of getting the stick into reverse. (Our very dicky clutch wont go into reverse on certain angles). Eventually the angels kissed our van and we got out of the predicament. The shop owner was so empathetic to these panicked travelers and she came and gave us a pendant stone to give us luck.

What followed then was two very stressed and angry people looking for a park in a traffic choked lakeside. When we did though we both ran, stripped and jumped into the water. It felt like being reborn and like a piece of our freedom had been restored.

Jena’s birthday was capped by fun scooting around the town, Great fondue and fireworks. Joel got his hand burnt, but that was always going to happen.

The next day we got new front brake pads, walked through the local produce markets, and had a boat ride around the lake. The water was so warm and bright blue! The little speed boat we hired was so slow, but it was great seeing the surrounding mountains from the lake centre.
