After hitting some shops in Bozeman to stock up for the upcoming backpack, this day leads off with another late departure.  My hope is to make in to the west entrance of Glacier in time to snag a front-country campsite, the next morning registering with the rangers and getting my permits and being on the trail sometime by midday.  Not so much...

Somewhere between midnight and one, the air cold and my speed kept slow to compensate, I call it good after creeping along with full layers (or so I thought) in second gear for about 15 minutes.  Too cold.  First time I've had to stop for that reason, I note.  I'm still probably about 80 miles from Glacier, and it's time to find a place to set up and crash for the night, so I start scanning for national forest roads.  I find one, and take it..  it T's, and I go left, looking for something that looks flat and isn't in the middle of the road..  then I see houses.  Hmm.  Not national forest it seems.  Quietly as I can with a running motorcycle, I ease to the right and pull a U-turn in the driveway.  Wait.  What.  No.  Damn.  For some reason, I've just dumped my bike, at walking speed fortunately, and before I can think to turn the key or hit the kill switch, it coughs into silence.  Hmm.  I try and lift it back up.  No dice.  So, this thing's pretty heavy with all my gear lashed on.  I try again.  Nope.  I'm much warmer though, and much more awake.  I turn the key, killing the headlight, and get out my headlamp to inspect and remedy the situation, hopefully before the neighbors wake up.  Bike looks okay.  Resting on crash bar (hey!) and gear.  A mixed blessing, I think.  Gear is slightly loose, but definitely still attached.  What the hell happened, by the way?  Ahh.  Found it.  A slight raised track of ground, obscured in the grass, unshadowed by my headlight and missed in my fatigue.  Enough so that when the front tire rolled onto it at a slant, a significant tilt was reached before I could react.  Nice recipe.  Lesson learned.  So, how should I get this thing back up then?  I find some strong lift points and manage to get it partially up with the seat resting on my right quad, and then..  up!  Phew.  Wasn't sure if I could make that happen.  Key on.  Engine turns, and fires, but doesn't catch.  Hmm.  Flooded?  Don't know what happens when you run a bike on it's side...  Try again, with some throttle.. hey!  More luck.  And, we're off.  And, it's cold again.  I have better luck with my next choice of road, finding a clearing a few dozen feet after I pull off the pavement.  It looks grand at 1:30 in the morning, and I down-rig and set up my tent, noting as I set my alarm for nine or so that getting to sleep at two might leave me a little tired tomorrow and that I might be getting on the trail just a bit later than I thought.
