So we paid up at our hostel in Rio and caught a bus to Ilha Grande (the big island) which is just next to not so big island. We arrive on the island via banana boat ferry with the island provisions and wildstock. The weather has broken and its turning out to be a beautiful day so nice in fact that I manage to burn my index finger and my right foot (as this is wear the tarpaulin of the boat has holes and burns me. I am now sporting designer sunburn!

Jodie Ailments II

Jodie´s leg has started to swell up from what looks like an infected mosquito bite...nasty looking. We reckon that she should start taking malaria tablets as these are mild antibiotic and should help. This makes matters worse as she is showing signs of extreme sensitivity to the sun (side effect of malaria tablets) so she is also nice and crispy and has refused to go into the sun. One good thing has come of this she reckons she will never complain when I refuse to sit in the sun. There is a god!!

Anyway after a visit to the local witch doctor and a few sacrificed chickens (alright doctors) jodie has cream for foot and seems to be doing trick...excellent

We meet this dude on the boat over who reckoned his hostel was the best place to stay on the island (don`t they all say this). Anyway he wasn`t joking this place is right at the end of the main town beach away from all the crowds and it has a private pool that sits at the edge of the beach , Palm tree fringed tropical rainforest covered moutains are our bedroom view. We arrive with a group of american teachers who are on summer holidays and we strike up conversation but we keep laughing mid sentence because we can`t quite believe how beautiful and serene this palce is....just the antedote we need from Rio.

The owner of the hostel is called Fred and I`m not so sure about him. He has a cleaning lady who looks very angry with him all the time and constantly shouts and rebukes him but apparently she is deaf so I guess that explains it. Apparently Freds was given the place after his old man passed away and the old lady used to be his nanny. Fred reckons that he can`t turn the place in to a five star place because she keeps on double booking guests and so wants to get rid of her: me and Jod don`t like Fred anymore! I think the old girl gives the place some character and I like to think she gives Fred what for at all times.

On the second night we have this God damn halabulo of a Barbecue. The steaks were so big they had to ride them to the barbecue. I had a food competition with English chap called Tom (who was very skinny) and he won, I was gutted! Must be out of practice. After the food we danced till the early morning with the other guys, gals and locals from the hostel. Fred plies us with caipirinha´s but informs us he doesn´t drink....arghhhhm bulLshit. The next night he is doing the lambada in the town square with beer in hand; he is a strange boy.

Drinking Note:

Caipirinha´s - A sugar cne brandy which is clear. Added to 3 or 4 sliced and crushed limes and a generous amount of ice and sugar.

2 will get you merry, 3 will make you dance witha complete stranger

The square is where its happening of an evening....lots of people playing with fire balls spinning them around their head...most of these performers are crusties and so I look on with more concern as their rasta locks will go up at any time. They have power cuts on the island all the time and when the local samba band get shorted out some guy with a pliers startes ripping through this big fat electric I know this guy isn´t corgy registered but it seems to be the way things get done in Brazil.

We have meet quite a lot of English people in Ilha Grande. James and Haley from Bristol these guys were really cute....James was funny when plastered and kept telling what an alright bloke I was and say things like come on gordy lets dance with the ladies. Listening to his tipsy ramblings it occoured to me that he reminded me so much of Gareth from the programme the office. Of course I told him this but he seemed to take it quite well except for calling me you absolute Barstarrd in his bristolian twang all night.

We have done some great stuff here like go snorkling in the blue lagoon and we trekked for hours in to the jungle and found this amazing waterfall which was totally empty just me and Jod and the jungle it was quite special....but jodie twisted her ankle on the descent down(can you believe it).

We have now paid up and as usual Fred is alot stoned even at 9.00 in the morning and so has only charged us for 4 nights instead of 5 which I only realize later...result.

Drinking note II

Brazilian Wine

Not the best. I bought a cheeky little number which looked and tasted like nail polish but had an interesting bouquet. It actually smelled of cheese....barf. It did only cost a pound so what did I expect.

Food note:

The Brazilians love cheese with anything, cheese and banana pizza, cheesey rice, cheese squid and ginger fish stew! Cheese on a barbeque...that was quite nice actually!

Also and prehaps the strangest food combination of all time and yet still tastes good is fish and weird is this place.
