THANKSGIVING DAY 2008

Teddy Wainwright and Richard Johnson have been in my autobiography since 1990!! I had moved down to Dutchess County from Columbia County and needed a job in the food industry. My high school friend from Boulder, Colorado suggested I go to Katonah and get a job at the Baker's Café. Ginger is a great music buff and knew the Waingwright's influence in the music industry. Teddy was managing the "Roche Sisters", Sloan was and is lead woman in "Sloan's Band", and thier brother Louden's legacy of song, satire and movies, ie. "Big Fish" and "The Forty Year Old Virgin", not to mention the now very suceessful nephew, Rufus. The two sister's, Sloan and Teddy owned and operated a café and bakery somewhere in Katonah.

Guided by Ginger's suggestion, I arrived at the Baker's Café unannounced and promptly got the job. They say there are no coincidences and I tend to believe that is true! The Cafe was owned by sisters, and run by 22 women. I was privileged to work as a luncheon chef and hone my skills as a health food, down home, just plain good food cook. It was exhilarating and wonderful to work with women in a nurturing and creative environment.

Teddy was our administrator and quickly became an Earth Mother support and friend. Now in 2008 with much water under our bridges we came together yet again to share in the bounty of a Thanksgiving feast.

Teddy and Richard share an adorable cottage in a quiet neighborhood filled with citrus trees and flowers in Stuart, Florida. A short walk on their road brings you to one of the two rivers that roll through this picturesque town. A town founded on the growing of flowers!!

Teddy gave Andy and I an auto tour of Stuart, the Indian and St.Lucie Rivers, a couple of her favorite beaches and the neighboring towns. We cruised around while Teddy told us the history and interesting tid bits of buildings and streets as we slowly passed. Andy and I soaked it all up. I thank "Teddy's Tours" for a great introduction to one of Florida's east coast treasures.

Andy and I created a lunch of Caesar Salad, smoked Wild Alaskan Salmon and assorted olives while we all caught up on each other's lives. Then off to our respective kitchens to prepare a Thanksgiving dinner. Teddy cooked a Turkey with stuffing and prepared some fresh and fabo zucchini with onions and garlic, while I baked up some sweet potatoes and sweet Vidalia onions from Georgia. I made gravy while our turkey rested and the table was set. Teddy even adorned our table with fresh flowers! Complete with cranberry sauce we all commenced to eat and talk and laugh into the evening.

Too full to enjoy dessert, we all washed dishes and put away leftovers. Andy and I left with lots of turkey for soup and sandwiches as well as a slice of pumpkin pie that didn't last till morning!

I am filled with gratitude to have had a life so rich with friends and experience. Thank you for everything.......

Happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving guys. Always enjoyed Baker's Cafe. Martha Wainwright is a very good singer also. Look for soundtrack of film tribute to Leonard Cohen-I'm Your Man-with Rufus and Martha. Rufus performing in Peekskill recently.
