July
I am losing awareness of dates and time....but I know it is still July! We all got up and out to Alec (Duncan's) house where John (Lund) keeps his skiff. Mercury and Carlee gathered up all the necessaries to use the boat and keep us safe. I (Jodie) made a picnic lunch packed into a cooler Carlee set up with ice packs and beverages.
Riding a boat to an Island beach destination is something everyone must experience at least once. In the capable hands of John and Mercury, I had not one tingle of nervousness as we shot through the water to land about 30 minutes later on the small and delightfully beautiful Blake Island. One can see Mt. Rainier as well as the Seattle sky line....even the needle (restaurant) if you look closely.
We took a long walk with Carlee as our naturalist and guide to return to the beach where our picnic awaited us
After some nap time in the sun, off we rode around to the other side of the Island where the Lummi Indians have a long house and serve up a salmon buffet done in the old style. The salmon is skewered to wooden stakes so it is flayed open and secure. It is then baked around an open fire by stabing the stake into sand surrounding the fire. They served salads, potatoes, rices, and fantastic Indian bread along with the salmon. During the meal a wonderful show was put on about the mysteries of the nature spirits and the relationship humans have with them. One story was how the crow stole the sun from a hoarding spirit and gave it to the humans. I took a bunch of pix but alas, none came out! Sorry. You'll just have to go to Blake Island and take in the show!
The ride home was refreshing and beautiful in the late evening sunset. We arrived to find Alec home with Christie...everyone's friend. We all chatted a bit and then drove on home tired and filled with salmon and mystery.

all aboard
. I spread out the cloth Carlee had packed and set out curried tofu salad and a smoked turkey, maple mustard salad. We wrapped tortillas around the salads along with some romaine lettuce from Carlee's garden. Yum!!!
