Drove up Route 101 along the Redwood Highway through miles of redwoods, sugar pines and other evergreens. We stopped at the Eel River State Park in Garberville and went down to the river for a swim. The water was emerald green and deep enough in some spots to dive off of a whale shaped rock sitting out in the middle. The rock had been worn down to a very smooth surface and the sun had been heating it up. It felt fantastic to climb up onto it and take the chill of the river away. The water was crystal clear and we could see right to the bottom, even in places that were 10 feet deep.
The river and the rock were visible to tractor trailer trucks going over the bridge and one of the drivers started blowing his air horn when he saw us down below. We waved up at him (or her?) and imagined that he (or she?) had done some swimming in the same spot. What a magical place to visit.
