May 22,

Woke up to a cold and rainy morning in Grants, NM. The town is surrounded by mountains and the range to the west of us (where we were planning to head) had snow at the top 1/4. The temperature was just above 30 degrees and there was some icing on sections of the parking lot.

I got onto the N.O.A.A. weather site, looked at the map and started entering the names of towns we were planning to drive through to see what kind of weather they were experiencing. Snow, slush, ice and freezing temperatures were being forcast for the next 7 days. Oh well, there went our plan (for now) of visiting the Petrified Forest, friends in Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, on and on. It was time to plan a new southern route to avoid the dread snow, ice and freezing temperatures.

Luckily, we only had to backtrack 45 miles on I-40 before heading south to ultimately pick up I-10. The heavy cross winds were still with us and the rain was moderate for our drive south. We had some breakfast and hit the road.

Glad you found a warmer route. When I rode my bike through the Grand Canyon I remember sleeping in the tent with wool mittens and wool socks over my hands completely zipped up in my sleeping bag. It was COLD. But so beautiful, hope you can make it there when its warmer. It's been a nice quiet Memorial Day on the lake :) Miss you guys!
