With much farewell and emotions running high, Andy, Maudie and Jodie (me) pull out of Katonah.
Changing the oil in "Miss RV" is on Andy's list of "must do before hitting the highway", so we accept Bob Duffy's offer to use his driveway which is set up with tool box, oil receiving pan and holding tank, tarps, one of those great little beds on wheels that work for lying on to get under cars, water and an air hose for correcting tire pressure!!! Bob has all sorts of cleaners and rags and oil additives stashed in his toolbox and he shared it all with us. RV being all fabo inside and out Andy is satisfied it is time to hit the road and head west and south!
After having an excellent lunch together with Bob at his favorite Mexican Rstaurant, Maya, just off of I84 and Rte9. we start off via I84. We arrived in Verona, Virginia at a KOA campground that gave us a much needed elevated opinion of KOAs. We met Paul and Christie who we had a fun filled evening with. Andy tried out their great bourbons and they tried his Hornitos tequila while we heard all their interesting stories. Great folks on the road in the USA!!!
We thoroughly enjoyed the kayaking on a lovely lazy river with a picturesque waterfall, pastures complete with cows and large rabbits running free in the campground. It was all right outside our door! Nice.
On to Roxboro, North Carolina to settle into Hyco Lake County Park for 4 days. Andy had found some lake properties to check out. We fell in with Teresa, a wonderful realtor who showed us all manner of properties on Hyco and Lake Mayo.
Traveling on further into North Carolina to check out Lake Norman. It is locally called, "The Inland Sea". It is huge and has loads of housing of every description with many public use areas and marinas. We want "quiet and remote" and to live peacefully, but this was one fun and beautiful lake for visiting!!!! Our stay in the State Park was lovely and rejuvinating. The park was virtually empty due to it being too early in the season so we got the pick of the park. We were nestled into the woods with a path leading down to the lake. We swam and hiked and biked the miles of roadways inside the park. What a fabulous resource! We also cooked our meals and sat around great roaring fires, a luxury, as so far the wood has been quite expensive. As an example,it cost $6 for about 6 small dry pieces of wood that burn up in 15 minutes. This has made fires a tad prohibitive. but not here in the North Carolina woods!!!! Here they get the wood from a furniture maker who donates his oak scraps to the Park as a community service. Terrific burning and they only charge $3 for a nights worth of wood. A nights worth? Far out! Andy and I really enjoyed fires way into the night! Made some of the best chicken ever!
Friends and distant relatives, Olivia Wells Storey and her husband, Dick had written us inviting us to say "hi" as we traveled north for Andy's Mom. We took a look at their address and realized they live at the bottom shores of this same Lake Norman!! So after a few telephone calls.....off we went. (See next entry for pix and details)

Gorgeous lakes...but fell for none...who knows what mystery directs the heart! It was probably the motor boats we weren't thrilled about. empty parks
with the price of fuel the parks may be a little less crowded this summer but that can be a good thing. The river looks nice have started with the kayak here
