DAY 5 (Monday): Getting up in the morning I had the fullest of full breakfasts including 'black pudding' which, I’m afraid, was not to my liking.

Had three elderly and very dear Irishmen for company who were in Perth for an accordion musical festival.  None of them knew much about SA except for the one who said he had heard of East London, SA and knew that it was part of Johannesburg.  I’m afraid I had to correct him and he seemed a bit perplexed that his geography had been found wanting.

After breakfast drove to St Andrews via Newburgh, Cupar (pronounced ‘Cooper’) and Pittscottie where the signs of the previous day’s floods were very evident.  Teams were hard at work with an impressive amount of machinery, clearing the mud.  The McQuaids live on an estate, Mount Melville, just outside St Andrews and from upstairs in their townhouse they had clear view down over the old town.

After a cup of tea and a chat, Lesley and I set off on an amazing +-1hr walk down to St Andrews.

Arriving in the old town we met Christopher at one of the original fortified entrances to the City.

Everything about the old town and university is very beautiful and atmospheric and we also spent a goodly time walking over the ruins of a huge cathedral destroyed by fire in 1378 and the adjacent ancient graveyard.

Christopher is based at the Scottish Oceanic Institute right on the shore’s edge.

Left at about 4pm and got back to Perth via the same route in reverse.

There was quite a traffic jam into Perth so I parked the car and walked across a swollen Tay over the beautiful old bridge.

Found a nice pub, "The Kirkside", pubs being the best place to meet people and strike up conversation which is as important to me as seeing things.
