Going to the jungle

One of the most amazing experiences.
It took a day and a half to finally get into the boat on the Manu River but it was worth it. Although there were moments on the bus ride where I´d wished I was somewhere else. The dusty, bumpy road curved its way along rugged cliffs with bottomless canyons. Then we entered the cloud forest where the canyons became even deeper - when you could see the bottom through all the mist anyway. It was here we saw the most amazing birds - the Cock of the Rock, which Jordan of course made his own personalized ¨cock of the rock¨ dance. We were under the impression that our nights in the jungle would be spent in tents - we were pleasantly surprised to be accomodated in rustic lodges built from bamboo or local wood with roofs of palm leaves. Then there was the place that didn´t have walls joining the roof - of course this place happened to be in the vacinity of a tarantula nest! Man, those guys are HUGE!! Sadly only one snake that only Charlie saw - it just happened to be a coral snake, the most venmous in the area but like the daddy long legs, its teeth are too small to bite us.
5 days spent lounging on a wooden boat drifting along through a pristine rainforest area. Sadly, no Jaguars but plently of birds and capybaras (Giant members of the rat family) to keep us busy. Only one frog and a very cute opposum eating a cochroach but we lost count of the number of caimen (alligators)watching us as we went past. One night we were out on a lake till dark and the number of red eyes watching us as we came back to shore was really frightening - i think it sent a chill up everyone! The best guys though were the monkeys. One place we stayed had 4 different species all within a kilometer of our huts. Its actually pretty scary waking up to the sounds of the howler monkey. They sound so bizzare and eerie. Unlike the wooly monkeys that we woke from there afternoon nap. They had a big tantrum and threw things at us!
We had perfect jungle waether the whole time (hot & humid) except of course the day before we left when it rained. Of course this sent a few of us (yep, including me) into panic made as the planes don´t caome in the rain. The airport is a grass semi-landing strip patrolled by three geese. The only thing scarier was taking on the road we came in on in the rain! kylie More thumbnails ...
