The first afternoon I took myself off for a wander round the town. And was back just a few hours later having decided that there was nothing to see! I announced my boredom to a few other travellers in the hostels and they became my new friends, agreeing that there was indeed not much to do in this town. So next day we got out of town and went to Sapi Island, about 45 minutes boat ride from KK, imagining a nice day of sunbathing and snorkelling
. About half way there the sea just got choppier and choppier and then it started raining, we were all drenched and frozen and both the island and the mainland had disappeared from view behind a sheet of rain. Nice! Luckily by the time we got to the island the weather had improved and it actually stayed dry for us. We took a walk around the whole island, stopping for a little bit of swimming and snorkelling at a deserted beach, welll deserted apart from the naked snorkeller who got a bit of a shock when he looked up and saw all of us gawping at him!
Tomorrow I have this crazy idea of going to climb Mount Kinabalu with the people I have met. I had ruled this out as stupid and outwith my capabilities but it seems I am going anyway.
I was already nervous about flying after hearing about the Thai plane crash so my flight being delayed an hour and a half for "rountine maintenance" didn't go down well. I had a delicious fried egg and smoked salmon (an interesting combination) muffin which cheered me up! Flight finally took off and I got to Kota Kinabalu (known as KK) and to the hostel I had selected from the LP with no problem. Hostel seemed decent enough, nice dorms, free internet and free breakfast, all good!
