The hotel itself is nice enough, rising as it does above the crescendo of car horns from the street, although the Fort area of Mumbai (where we're staying) went strangely quiet last night. We spent yesterday mostly relaxing in the Oval Maiden, a public park where Kanan was put through one of many impending cricket-related experiences – watching the locals playing out more games than you could care to imagine, each overlapping the other with tightly controlled and adhered to rules for fielding whilst playing on pitches tightly packed across the playing area
A stroll on Marine Drive was followed by a meal of such deliciousness that it had me fretting for my waistline for the next six weeks. Whereupon we ignored all advice given prior to our trip and frankly couldn’t resist indulging in the array of yummy chutneys …. Here’s to a solid stool in days to come! We then caught up with sleep for 12 hours.
Today (Tuesday 19th) was spent taking in Mumbai’s monumental train station. In getting there I was mobbed by a group of about ten small children; not for anything in particular (money etc, they were actually middle class kids I think), for as soon as they had touched me they ran off. Maybe it was good luck to touch the massively tall white man or something. We also visited Mumbai’s High court, and sat in on some court room action – all of it would have been fascinating had I not been fretting all the while about potential irony of our camera disappearing from the hands of the four security people who wouldn’t let us take it in. It was fine though. I also bought an Indian cricket shirt – having had “Andrew Flintoff!” shouted at me twice already I reckon on it being a bit of a conversation starter.
Off to Santa Cruz (a Mumbai Suburb) tomorrow before flying down to Kerela which we both hope will be a little less hectic than Mumbai, although I think we have both been surprised at how little poverty and chaos we’ve actually seen.
Here’s to solid stools until the next entry
