Checked out of our Greenbelt, MD hotel and drove 25 min. to Mount Vernon, home of George Washington. It was already getting crowded at 8:15 am but we were glad to be there on such a beautiful sunny day, with only 75 degree temperatures.

We enjoyed our tour of the mansion and the beautiful view of the Potomac from the Washingtons' back porch. We enjoyed an authentic colonial lunch at the Mount Vernon Inn with peanut & chestnut soup, roasted chicken, turkey pye, and bread pudding for dessert. (Well, the boys had chocolate cake.) The new museum near the restaurant was excellent. It even held Washington's dentures (not wooden, but animal and human teeth). We stayed 6 hours and that still wasn't enough to see it all.

But alas, it was time to return our trusty rental car. We were glad to be exchanging it for Metro (subway) passes. The boys had been at each others' throats every time we got into the car. I don't blame them though, they had gone over 1000 miles, 24 hours on the road, in just 6 days.

After a rest in our new Arlington hotel, we decided to go exploring. Intending to visit just the rooftop restaurant and indoor pool, I did not bother bringing my purse. Then we decided to venture outside the hotel after all. Not much around but office buildings and closed shops, we ambled onto the Francis Scott Key Memorial Bridge which leads to the charming village of Georgetown. (Named after King George, not George Washington.) It was quaint and cute and teeming with people this lovely Sunday evening. Suddenly we saw lightening and within seconds the wind picked up and it started to sprinkle. Ironically, I had carried rain ponchos around all week in my purse, but didn't have them when we really needed them!

We decided to continue on toward the Kennedy Center, since I remembered that they had a free shuttle to the Foggy Bottom Metro station. Fortunately our Metro passes were in Ratko's wallet, not my purse! Since we were there anyway, we explored all around the beautiful performing arts complex, going out on the rooftop terrace in the rain to watch the sun set behind a fountain.

Our return to the hotel went swimmingly. The shuttle was boarding just as we got outside, and our Metro train arrived just as we did. A half block back to the hotel in the rain was fun, and we weren't even soaked! It was quite the unexpected adventure.
