Our plan for the day was to travel to Pikes Peak.
We arrived at Pikes Peak about noon and at the base of the mountain we learned that we were only allowed to travel 13 of the 19 miles up the peak due to extreme weather conditions. At the summit it was -30 degrees with 40mph winds. At 13 miles up the mountain the temperature was -6 degrees not including winds.
We started to head up the mountain and the views were incredible. The roads were snowpacked and slick almost the entire 13 miles, there were no guardrails on the road which made me a little nervous. It took us about 45 minutes to go 13 miles. We stopped at the Glen Cove Inn at mile 13 and grabbed a quick bite to eat before heading back down the mountain
Brent and I originally planned to head to Denver and Boulder, but another approaching winter storm in Utah, Idaho and northern Colorado changed our plans. We got to the base of Pikes Peak and did some quick shopping at Manitou Springs near the base and decided to make our way back to Indianapolis.
The topography in eastern Colorado and western Kansas was flat and had no variation in vegatation, it was mostly brown dead grass. It was the most boring leg of the trip so far. We could not get any music on the radio except for country so we put in a book on CD, John Krakauer's Into Thin Air about several expedition teams experience climbing up and down Mt. Everest. It seemed appropriate given our earlier visit to Pikes Peak. Great book to listen to on the road or to read.
We drove another 7 hours on I-70 and stopped in Salina, Kansas about 3 hours from Kansas City. Not sure where we are headed to next, we'll decide in the morning.
While on the road today Brent and I each bought Powerball lottery tickets in New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas. The jackpot for Saturday night is $42 million. If we win it will enable us to stay on the road and continue our adventures. We'll see if it is our lucky day.
