So we made it, at least the first leg of our trip. We arrived in Amarillo Texas last night about 9pm.  Fifteen hours in the car was not that bad accept for a tricky couple of hours midway through our trip.

We left Indianapolis and headed west on 1-70 towards St. Louis. We were making really good time until we hit Tulsa Oklahoma.  That's when the sleet started.  It got worse as we got closer to Oklahoma City.  We learned that the we were right in the middle of the Winter Storm Warning that was in effect for Oklahoma, Kansas, and Northern Texas.

As we got into Downtown Oklahoma City, there were cars that spun out everywhere as a result of a really thick layer of ice on the roads.   We also saw a pick-up truck completely flipped over in the middle of the interstate.  The roads were terrible and we didn't get over 25 mphs for almost 2 hours.  Outside of Oklahoma City we saw 2 jackknifed semi's headed east, traffic was backed up for miles.  Lot's of blowing and drifting snow.

Once arriving in Amarillo Texas we learned that there was a 40 car pile up right outside Amarillo Texas on I-40 earlier in the day.   The interstate was closed for hours.  Sounds like we got really lucky.

Off to Silver City, New Mexico, 8 more hours on the road.
