One point of recent particular interest was Gerard, KS where located in the county square is a Viet Nam memorial listing the Kansas soldiers killed during the war. The memorial is patterned after the one in Washington. One cannot escape a sensation of sorrow when doing nothing more than viewing the simply designed monument.
Also in Gerard on the town square is Mom's Place - the local small restaurant. These small community restaurants have become particularly attractive features of this trip. Another such example was the Cassoday Restaurant in Cassoday, KS. There a breakfast buffet on the first Sunday of each month hosts motorcyclists from not only that area of Kansas, but Texas and Oklahoma as well. Cassoday is small enough so a traffic light is not required. Incidentally, it is the prairie chicken capital of the US.
We are passing through the "flint hills" of Kansas where one can view miles of native grasslands. Herds of cattle numbering hundreds are scattered about the prairie feeding in what I've been told are free graze areas.
Tomorrow, I suspect, we will begin to see the vast wheat fields of Kansas.
Our group remains intact and in great spirits. We have been blessed.
