Samoan Insect Dance
Trip Start Jun 25, 2003

Writing from Samoa, land of big spiders, beautiful beaches and of two very lazy Americans. First of all, a bit of background about the spider. As a man, Jordan has not lived up to his masculine duties of protecting me from all crawling entities. Our first night in Samoa we learned about the existence of enormous, hairy, poisonous, gun-toting (Jordan wanted me to write that) spider from a very nice Canadian girl. Upon hearing her tell us about the huge spider she saw in the shower of her hostel we politely laughed off her exaggeration until we returned to our little bungalow (read: rustic shed)to turn in. Feeling a bit apprehensive about spiders, I did a quick perimeter check of the bungalow and immediately started screaming (and according to Jordan, doing some sort of "insect dance"). The cause of my scream - the hugest, biggest, thickest, nastiest spider I ever saw outside an enclosed glass box (this includes my tv when turned to the Discovery channel)
So, it comes as no suprise after such an ordeal we needed a bit of time to recuperate. And without too much trouble we found the perfect spot with the most beautiful beach EVER (well at least of those we've seen in our last 4 weeks in the South Pacific). White sand, blue skies, azure water, swaying palm tress, no big spiders, very cool people and the most welcoming Samoan family running the place. What was supposed to be 2 days turned into 6, and we even considered bagging New Zealand to turn our 6 days into 6 weeks
We are now back in Apia, the capital of Samoa and plan to tour Upolu, the more populous of the two main Samoan islands in just one day. Unfortunately we ran out of time for the leisurely loop around the island by getting stuck on the beach in Savaii island.
And finally, a great big shout out to Mo (of Herkmo inc.) for encouraging us, no strongarming us, into including Samoa on our world tour. Great call. This place is a true gem (and cheap too!). Plus no hard feelings about the spider.
Jordan says we forgot to mention one other Leo bday. Dan Lee is August 1st. Happy Happy Birthday,Dan!
Talk to you all soon,
