I said goodbye to my apartment on Sunday and goodbye to my family this morning and went... to work. Aside from the huge backpack on the T with me, nothing made me feel like this morning was different from any other commute. It wasn't until I left 30 Winter for the last time to walk to South Station for the bus to NYC that I finally realized this trip is real.
Reality hit fast. I can already log my first awkward Chinese language encounter of the trip - at the Citizens Bank on Summer St in Boston. I drew a Chinese clerk when I went to handle money for travelling and ended up having to finish the transaction in Mandarin, trying to understand her heavy southern accent.
Getting quacked at by a duck tour made me reflect a bit on this whole strange tourist thing I'm about to be part of. I tripped over a few tour groups downtown and thought I should apologize to Mayor Mumbles for not following the pins on a 'staycation'. Apologies too to Mayor Mike from Medford for only spending one night in New York. I did have a great bus ride down here though. The Fung Wah bus made NYC in record time without catching on fire, AND I ended up sitting next to a grad student from Changsha and got to chat in Mandarin the whole ride.
I fly in 12 hours, trying to get myself on Beijing time already. I'm wicked excited.
