The whole idea of visiting this place was to investigate, on the cheap, the various ski resorts in the area, including what jobs may be available and to also check out lake Tahoe. What I hadn't anticipated, was that rather than being a thriving city with an abundance of hostels (minimal internet research was carried out prior to arriving, in other words I scribbled down the address of two options and didn't both phoning ahead); the Lovely Truckee was in fact a historical Gold Mining Town (village) and there were no hostels! I only discovered this after walking to the addresses to find just homes and no hostel... Oh shit!!  After walking around a little more, discovering that the information centre was closed and there were no more buses that day, I decided to pull my trusty credit card out and book myself into the next hotel I came across!  On asking for the most budget option they had, I found myself in their 'European Bedroom' - up in the atic, surrounded by hot water pipes and a bathroom down the corridor.....Where they get 'European' from, I do not know!
The next day I set about investigating nearby ski hills... Only two were open during the summer, and only one was reachable by public transport; My brilliant idea was definitely backfiring!! I made my way to the accessible resort, found personnel and introduced myself, whilst apologising for my 'out of the blue' visit.  Whilst helpful, all I got was a couple of email addresses that I could easily have got off the internet... So I guess it was a kind of disappointing visit.  That said, I suppose at least I got to check out the resort, which looks pretty nice.  As I was in the area, I checked out Lake Tahoe and 'Tahoe City' which was actually no bigger than Truckee but very picturesque and tourity as lakeside towns go.
My second and last night in Truckee was a little more eventful; the main stretch had been closed to traffic and had transformed into a bustling little fete full of random stands, lots of BBQ'd meats, beers and pretty cool, live country music.  Whilst mingling in the crowd, I got to overhear some entertaining small town conversations... My favourite came from a group of girls probably a little younger than me; they must have not seen eachother in a while, so were asking the all 'important questions' like... 'What number child are you on now', and 'what you're not married yet!!' And, 'oh, of course, several years now'.... I couldnt help but bitchily snigger as I walked away - what different worlds we live in!
