We drove first past Roaring Mountain and then on to Norris Geyser Basin.
The girls did a few experiments with Macneil dealing with a heat gun and pH strips. We witnessed Veteran Geyser erupting in a way that Macneil had never seen. It was very strong and a new vent seemed to have formed out of the right side. We visited Steamboat Geyser, the world's tallest geyser. It last erupted in 2005. It was just spitting for us. On our way back to the bus, Macneil pointed out a lodgepole pine with very distinctive marks. This was where a grizzly had stopped to stretch. There was fur on the tree next too it where we imagined the bear had a nice back scratch too.
We ate our bag lunches at a roadside pull-out. Our seats were the ground or rocks. Food always tastes extra good when you're outside, hungry and have worked up a sweat!
We stopped at the Indian River to have a little foot soak. The water was COLD! But you all know that doesn't deter Katie and Sarah. Amazingly though, they kept their clothes dry. After coercing them out of the river, we headed back toward Mammoth. We briefly stopped at what Macneil called "Oooh, Ahh Falls." It is very pretty, but not the best one in the park as you'll see later.
Our last stop took us to the Upper Terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs. We were in for a big treat. Macneil led us off of the typical tourist trails to the breath-taking Narrow Gauge Spring. The pictures do not do the colors justice. There were portions of the newly formed travertine that looked like ice (aka travertine ice). Mom was a bit winded and enjoyed the shade during this visit.
We ended the day very satisfied and excited about the next day. Mom collapsed back at the cabin and Dad, Katie, and Sarah headed into Gardiner, Montana for some grub. They had pizza at Outlaw's Pizza (but it did not have chicken nuggets on it). They also saw some big horn sheep on the way. Mom woke up when they arrived back at the cabin. She took the girls with her for her dinner (cheeseburger) and got some ice cream for them and Dad.
