Today, as we all know, is Easter. And today myself and a few others woke up at 5 A.M. to leave at 5:30 A.M. for Easter Mass in St. peter's Square in Vatican City. We all walked as zombies because we didn't dare risk drinking coffee because of the lack of toilets and the long time span. Dr. Keely did provide us with a ton of pastries which was fabulous! You see, mass did not start until 10. So we all arrived outside St. Peter's Colonnade at 6 A.M. until 8 when there was a crazy rush to get through security (they let everyone through the metal detectors whether the buzzer beeped or not-classic Italians). There was a limited amount of seats, which is why we left so early and luckily we got some very close to the Pope! We were really lucky! There was about 125,000 people in St. Peter's Square!
We sat there until 10 when the swiss guards and a marching band came down the colonnade playing music, interrupting the praying of the rosary. Then Papa Francesco appeared and performed a two hour long mass... I even received communion (not from Papa Francesco sadly). After the mass he got on his Pope-mobile and drove through the crowds and I got a great photo of him! He then went up to the window in St. Peter's Basilica and gave a brief Angelus before disappearing inside.
We then waited and hour and a half for a bus to take us to Easter Dinner. We had a five course meal including two pasta dishes, two meat dishes (one of which was veal), and dessert (ricotta pie for everyone else, mini Nemi strawberries for me!). Because we were all full from our 3 o'clock dinner we skipped actual dinner and just all got gelato!
All in all it was a pretty great Easter!
