Hello everyone,
This weekend we went on our first weekend long excursion to Florence, Tuscany, Italy.  We left thursday after class and took the high speed train to Florence which ended up being an hour and a half ride.  It passed by quickly but felt worse on the ears than an airplane because of the constant moving through tunnels.  When we arrived it was -surprise- still raining like it has been all week.  Four of use (myself included) took a cab to our place of stay while the rest walked.  Our place of stay: a convent, with nuns and everything.

The convent is what you are thinking of. Nuns live and work there and the hallways and rooms are ancient, extremely creepy at night.  We were given breakfast every morning and had to be back at the convent every night by 11:30 P.M. because one nun waited up every night until everyone was back.

On Friday we spent about 8 hours walking and touring various sites and museums like Il Duomo, Piazza della Signorina, the Ponte Vecchio, and many other things that have been lost in my memory because that day was just exhausting.  We did get to shop around at all of the leather stores and bought some souvenirs at the leather market.

Saturday we only had to tour for about four hours except I had to do an extra hour with the professors for my independent study and we saw the Medici Tombs.  We did more shopping of course.  And sunday I toured the Michelangelo museum for my independent study and did more shopping before we left at 1:30

Every night we went out to eat.  The first night took two hours and was a three course meal and incredibly filling. There was a soup, a pasta, and a meat course that was nearly impossible to eat all of.  The second night was just and antipasto, pasta dish, and salad... it took much less time. The third night we just had pizza.

Sunday night when we got back it was still down pouring and we basically sprinted back from the train station.  Florence was a beautiful city and a great way to start off the weekend excursions.
