We arrived in Guilin in the late afternoon with enough light left to see the first of the Karst Mountains. It is easy to understand why people rave about this area as these mammoths that were once, many millions of years ago, the deep blue ocean floor are quite amazing. We had no idea how big they would be nor how many of them we would be seeing. Our drive in from the airport was an amazing array of shapes and sizes.

We were supposed to have a Guilin city tour in the morning before driving on to Longji Rice Terraces but we agreed with our guide that we would delay the tour and head off first thing in the morning to see the "Dragons Backbone" of the Rice Terraces.

We spent the evening wandering along the lakeside in front of our hotel and finding a supermarket to stock up on the usual provisions of water and biscuits. This time we added a beer to the list which went down really well. All the Chinese local beer is fairly low alcohol, between 3.5% and 4.0%, comes in bottles of between 500 millilitres and 660 millilitres and tastes surprisingly good. We have tasted the local beer of most regions that we have visited and come to the conclusion it is all much the same beer, just with different labels and bottles :-)
