From UB airport we headed straight off to the Terelj National Park. It was amusing, fascinating and frightening to experience a petrol station. We pulled in, the driver shouted something at the attendant and kept the engine running while petrol was being pumped into the tank. Then, as if a signal was passed between driver and attendant, we just pulled out as though in practice for a rally!

We stayed in the Terels Bumban Tour-Tok camp, one of many Ger camps around this national park. The attraction is the wide open space and the spectacular cliffs of stones that look that have been piled there by giants as part of a rock-balancing game.

We were taken off to the main tourist stop, Turtle Rock where, from one angle only, this particular pile of rocks looks like a giant turtle Terelj National Park

. Every tourist and local bus in the area makes this stop and the tourists are offered horse and camel rides. Not somewhere to be when there is all this tranquil beauty to be had.

We returned to our camp and went for a walk up the hill to see the view. We got adopted by one of the local goats who came along for the walk.

Supper was a traditional Mongolian grill using stones to cook the food. Each plate comes along with a hot stone that you have to hold but swap very quickly between hands until it cools down a bit. After you put it down (and clean your hands) you put your palms over your eyes to warm them. All this is around health and, to be honest, quite comforting on the eyes.
